Mainly cultural, but includes Williamson's opinions that it was not a native of Guernsey, p. 448, and he quotes the story that some roots of it were thrown up on the shores of the island after a shipwreck. That both Kaempfer & Thunberg asserted that it grew wild in Japan, etc. Williamson thought that it was not even indigenous to Japan, but had been brought in from either Cochin China or from some of the islands of the eastern Archipelago.
