Note: Seven crops are mentioned on p. 37: wheat, barley, brinjals, radishes, carrots, tobacco and cotton. The two last-mentioned "take the lead." The cultivation of cotton is discussed next, continuing on p. 48. "The finest description of the cotton in the privince (of Bassoo or Vahoo), is produced by the perennial "nirmah" or "goreah" … Among annual varieties, next to the above, are those of Broach, Surat, Ahmode and Jumbooseer districts, known collectively as "Surats." Next in quality is that of the Bhownuggar and Gogah districts, then of Kattiwar and Kutch, and last of all, the Dollera and Jafferabad. Samples of Bourbon and Sea Island cotton have been introduced, seemingly to enable the East India merchants to compete with the Americans in the British market." On p. 61 Dr. Roxburgh is quoted from his Flora Ind., vol. 1, p. 85, in comments on Salicornia brachiata and indica, "plentiful on the coast of Coromandel." Roxburgh's remarks on Salsola nudiflora are also from Flora Ind., vol. 2, pp. 60-61.
