Walford describes the way to discover gravel or stone without the necessity of boring, merely by looking for the common white saxifrage (Saxifraga granulata). Although there is no botanical description of the plant, Walford gives references to its description in Curtis 'Flora Londiniensis' and in William Woodville's Medical botany! Watford gives the dates of flowering, its habitats in Essex and Suffolk. The plate here is copied from Woodville.
