Numerous articles had been written in journals about the substance found by the Spanish naturalist, in the thermal waters of Baden, and which he called zoogène. The substance had, in fact, been known for 75 years and hadd been discovered in waters at Carlsbad by Springsfeld. Scherer subsequently named it conferva thermalis. It was known by modern botanists as tremella reticula.
A footnote gives the titles of works on tremella reticula, by Springsfeld, Schrank, Scherer and Strange.
