Notes: Tells less about Baumann himself than of the history of his family in Alsace. In the 15th century Reinhold von Rose, count of Bollweiler, chose as his gardener, Kaspar Baumann, who had learned gardening in Holland, and from the Bollweiler gardens originated the hybrid Sorbus (Pirus) Bollwilleriana. Tellls of the activities of Baumann's father in the eighteen-twenties, when he discovered in the neighborhool of Temesvár in Hungary certain rare ferns which are now growing at Kew in England.
