Notes: | On card: 1817 - 1878; born Glasgow, died London; physician with Brit. East-India Company; 1840 posted in Calcutta and soon afterwards sent to Afghanistan, where he was captured by rebels in 1842, and would have been sold as a slave had not he succeeded to free himself by bribing; returned to Calcutta but the science results of the journey were lost; 1847-51 travelled W. Himalaya and Tibet, making large collections, on which journey he wrote an account; 1854-61 dir. of the Calcutta bot. garden; author of several publ., a. o. with J.D. Hooker the first vol. of a flora of India, of which the next volumes were not accomplished by lack of money. Aster thomsonii Clarke, Ficus thomsonii Miq., Oenanthe thomsonii Clarke, Rhododdendron thomsonii Hook. F., Vitis thomsonii Laws., and Pothos thomsonianus were named for him. |
