German and Swiss plants. 1815-18 participant as bot. of Russ. exped. around the world (ship: Rurik), equipped by Prince Romanzoff, led by O.V. Other than as a naturalist, he is well-known as a poet, esp. for his "Peter Schlemil" (the man who sold his shadow) and his "translation of Beranger's poems".
