| Notes: | 1832-1922; born Barry, Forfarshire, Scotland, died Sevenoaks, Kent, England; physician; 1858-63 accompanied David Livingstone when exploring over the Zambesi to Central Africa; he coll. much bot. and zool. material which was sent to England; in the harbour of Portsmouth 4 cases with plants were mislaid; only 30 years later they were found back in a shed. After a short period in Europe, he was posted in Zanzibar, 1865, where he founded an experimental garden, and went on collecting. After 21 years, ca. 1886, he returned permanently to Eur. Over 100 plants, discovered by him, have been named after him, a.o. 'Crinum kirkii' Baker, and 'Drimiopsis kirkii' Baker. |
