Sent to Mauritius (Ile de France) 1753-61 to found a pharm. laboratory and a bot. gard; shipped many plants, animals, and minerals to France. On order of the Fr. Gov. stayed in French Guiana 1762-64; coll. and descr. many plants. After some years as official in Haiti, returned to France; edited his "Historie des Plantes de la Guiane Francaise", in 1775. 'Aubletia' Gaertn. named for him. |
