Notes: Thwaites, G. H. Kendrick; 1811-1882; born Bristol, died Kandy, Ceylon; botanist; originally he studied lower cryptograms; 1847 he discovered diatoms not to be animals but plants; 1849 superintendant of the Peradeniya bot. garden in Ceylon; here he studied higher plants; was employed here till 1880; since 1857 its dir.; contributed meritoriously to the knowledge of the wild Ceylon flora, of vanilla, quinine, tea, and coffee cultures. Plants with the epithet 'thwaitesianus' or 'thwaitesii', were named for him.
