Notes: Linnaeus's views were founded in his Christian upbringing. He referred to philosophical statements of van Helmont, Cesalpino, Boerhaave & others, but generally remained aloof from contemporary scientific thought as in the teachings of Descartes, Leibnitz & Newton. No direct utterance has been found as to the relation of Linnaeus to his famous countryman Swedenborg. By nature the 2 were completely opposite: Swedenborg a speculative theoretician drawing upon the observation of others; Linnaeus a keenly observant realist with an extraordinary ability to survey, evaluate & organize contemporary knowledge. “C” form in HI biography file.
