| Notes: | Rolander, Daniel; 1725-1793; Danish; student in Upsala of Linnaeus who charged him as private teacher of his son; studied nat. hist. industriously, esp. entomology, and made valuable observations. When the Swedish officer C.G. Dalberg from Surinam, during a visit to Sweden, 1754, offered a free stay in his house for a young naturalist wanting to investigate Surinam naturalistically, Linn. elected Rolander. On his return R. brought a pot with a cactus covered with cochenille scale-insects which he sent to Linn. who was very anxious to see and study them; but, his industrious gardener transplanted the cactus and removed the "vermin" before showing it to his master, thus causeing Linn. a bad headache. Rolandra Rottb. was named for Rolander. |
