Notes: | Actually Joséphine Marie Joséphe Rose Tascher de la Pagerie; often called Joséphine de Beauharnais; 1763-1814; born Trois-Ilets, Martinique, died Malmaison nr. Paris; 1779 married Alexandre de Beauharnais (beheaded 1794); 1796 married Napoleon Bonaparte, then gen. of French Republique; immediately after his own coronation as Emperor he crowned her Empress, 1804; in 1809 Nap., who wanted an divorced her because of childlessness; she kept the title of Empress. She was a great lover of flowers; a bulb which she bought in Holland was the first to flower in Europe at her castle in Malmaison; therefore the species was named after her; 'Brunsvigia josephinae' Kew-Gawl, just as is 'Josephinia' Vent. ('Josephinia imperatricis Vent.). |
