America with this son; when returning with 60,000 living plants and 40 cases of seeds, he was shipwrecked off the Dutch coast and lost part of his coll.; 1800 with Capt. Baudin voyage to China and the Pacific; 1801 remaind in Mauritius from where he visited Madagascar where he died; was author of some sci. publ.; the Flora of N. America publ. 1803 under his name, was based on his coll. but actually was written by L. Cl. M. Richard. 'Cyperus michauxianus' Torrey, and 'Panicum michauxianum' Kth., were named after him.
