| Notes: | Clarke, Ch., Baron; 1832-1906; England, born Andover, Hants, died Kew; lawyer and bot.; 1866-77 and 1884-87 in India, collecting much. In 1868 all his Bengal plants, almost 7000 numbers, got lost by shipwreck; he collected anew; at last he had 25,000 specimens of 5000 species. 1869-71 temporary dir. Callcutta bot. gard.; he was a specialist on Cyperaceae and wrote a number of plant families for Hooker's Flora of British India, and for De Candolle's Suites au Prodrome. 'Didissandra clarkei Kds.', and 'Scirpus clarkei Stapf.', are named for him. |
