Bournemouth; in 1848 traveled Brazil, making a collection of nat. curiosities which was destroyed by fire on the ship on the way home; 1854-62 travelled the E. Indian Archipelago, making large zool. coll.; 1858 sent a treatise to Darwin in which he developed a theory on originating species by surviving of the individuals which are best fit for the battle of existence; later he proved to be one of the most true adherents of this theory which mostly was developed by Darwin; author of many sci. publ., esp. in the zool.-geogr. field; best known is his travel book "The Malay Archipelago, the Land of the Orang-utan and the Bird of Paradise"; later on he practised mersmerism and spiritualism. 'Trichotosia wallaceana Dränzl.', 'Alsophila wallacei Mett.', 'Wallaceodendron Kds.', were named for him. |
