Toledo, died Madrid; court-physician to King Philipp II of Spain; who sent him to Mexico (= New-Spain, then a Sp. colony_ for nat. hist. res.; he stayed there 1571-77; the results he reported in an extended and excellent work of which in 1615 and 1651 parts were published (concerning medicines); the whole work which for a long time was supposed to be lost in the large fire of the Escorial, 1671, was found back at the end of the 18th century, and publ. 1790. He left also unpubl. mss. 'Phaseolus hernandezii Savi', and 'Hernandia L.' named for him.
